What the 2500 designation means
Sprinter model numbers describe weight class, not engine size. The 2500 sits between the light-duty 1500 and the heavy-duty 3500, with a gross vehicle weight rating generally between about 8,550 and 9,050 pounds depending on body and wheelbase. Payload typically falls in the 3,000 to 3,700 pound range. It runs single rear wheels, which keeps the track narrower, the ride better unloaded and tire costs lower than a dual-rear-wheel 3500.
2500 vs. 3500: which you need
Choose the 2500 for cargo work, crew vans, camper conversions and passenger loads up to about twelve. Choose the 3500 when the vehicle must carry fifteen occupants plus luggage, or when a conversion adds several thousand pounds of cabinetry, glass, batteries and seating. The rule of thumb: if your loaded weight will regularly exceed roughly 3,000 pounds of payload, the 2500 is the wrong chassis and you will be riding on its bump stops.
High-roof body on the 2500
The high roof gives about 6 feet 4 inches of interior standing height and, on the extended body, cargo volume approaching 533 cubic feet.
