What the 3500 designation means
Sprinter model numbers describe weight class, not engine size. The 1500 is the lightest, the 2500 is the mainstream cargo and passenger chassis, and the 3500 is the heavy-duty chassis with a higher gross vehicle weight rating, upgraded rear suspension and brakes, and the option of dual rear wheels. A 3500 is what you need when the vehicle will carry fifteen adults plus bags, or when a coachbuilder is adding several thousand pounds of cabinetry, glass and seating. There is also a 3500XD and 4500 for the heaviest upfits.
Payload, GVWR and towing
A 3500 Sprinter typically carries a GVWR near 11,030 pounds. Depending on body, wheelbase and equipment, payload commonly lands between roughly 4,000 and 5,000 pounds — enough for fifteen passengers averaging 180 pounds plus luggage with margin. Towing capacity is generally up to about 5,000 pounds with the factory hitch. Those numbers are why a 15 passenger van cannot legally be built on a lighter chassis: fifteen adults with bags is close to two and a half tons before you count the vehicle.
Single vs. dual rear wheels
Dual rear wheels — the 'dually' setup — spread load across four tires at the rear, raising stability under heavy load and providing redundancy if one rear tire fails. The trade-offs are a wider track, a slightly harsher unloaded ride and higher tire replacement cost. Passenger fleets often run single-rear-wheel 3500s for ride quality and easier parking; conversion and heavy commercial builds usually take duals. Either way, load the van rear-first and keep heavy bags ahead of the rear axle for the best handling.
