144-inch wheelbase passenger van: typically 12 seats, with limited luggage room behind the last row. 170-inch wheelbase passenger van: 12 or 15 seats depending on whether row four is fitted, with the 12 seat version keeping a deep luggage bay. Crew van: 5 seats in any wheelbase. Cargo van: 2 or 3. Conversions vary. Longer wheelbase and the 3500 weight rating together are what make the 15 seat configuration possible.
What the chassis rating adds
The 3500 designation brings a gross vehicle weight rating near 11,030 pounds, heavier-duty rear suspension and brakes, and the option of dual rear wheels. Those upgrades are required to carry fifteen occupants plus their belongings safely and legally. A 2500 chassis is fine for twelve passengers with light bags, but fleets standardize on the 3500 so a single vehicle can serve either configuration by adding or removing the rear row.
Capacity in practice
Assume roughly one airline suitcase per passenger and the picture changes: fifteen occupants and fifteen suitcases do not coexist in one Sprinter. The workable combinations are fifteen passengers with carry-on-sized soft bags only, twelve passengers with full checked luggage, or ten to fourteen passengers in an executive layout with a rear bay. Every rental decision comes down to which of those three you are.
