Seating layout and belts
Fifteen seats are arranged as the driver plus a front passenger position, then four rows behind. Every position has a three-point lap-and-shoulder belt anchored to the seat structure — this is a meaningful safety difference from older 15 passenger vans that used lap belts in the rear. The center aisle stays walkable, so boarding does not require climbing over other passengers, and the sliding side door plus rear barn doors give two loading paths.
Dimensions, luggage and the 12 passenger trade-off
The van rides on the 170-inch extended wheelbase and is roughly 22 to 24 feet long overall with about 6 feet 4 inches of interior height. With all fifteen seats installed, the space behind the last row is a shallow shelf — good for backpacks and soft duffels, not for fifteen roller bags. Groups flying in with checked luggage almost always do better in a 12 passenger configuration, which removes the fourth row and opens a bay for roughly ten to twelve suitcases.
Safety, handling and driving one
Modern Sprinters include crosswind assist, attention assist, and available blind-spot monitoring, lane-keeping and active brake assist — systems designed specifically for a tall, long vehicle. Drive it like a large van: leave extra following distance, brake earlier, take corners wider, watch for the extended rear overhang when turning, and check overhead clearance before any garage or drive-through. Load heavy bags ahead of the rear axle. Handling is stable and car-like compared with older body-on-frame 15 passenger vans.
Licensing, insurance and cost
A 15 passenger Sprinter is under the 16-passenger federal threshold and well under the 26,001-pound CDL weight threshold, so a standard driver's license is sufficient for personal and most non-commercial group use. Note that many personal auto policies and credit cards exclude 15 passenger vans, which is why our rentals include state-required liability and offer a collision damage waiver. Rates start around $195 per day, all-in, with weekly and monthly pricing available.
