The manufacturer: Mercedes-Benz
The Sprinter is a Mercedes-Benz product, engineered and produced by the Mercedes-Benz Vans division. Following Daimler's 2021 split, the commercial-vehicle side of the group became Daimler Truck while Mercedes-Benz Group retained the van business, so the Sprinter continues to be developed and sold under the Mercedes-Benz brand. It has been in continuous production since 1995 across three generations — the first-generation W901–905, the second-generation W906 introduced in 2006, and the current W907/910 launched for 2019.
Where Sprinter vans are built
European production runs from Düsseldorf and Ludwigsfelde in Germany, with additional assembly historically in Spain and Argentina. For North America, Mercedes-Benz opened a full manufacturing plant in North Charleston, South Carolina in 2018 — a body shop, paint shop and assembly line, replacing the earlier arrangement in which vans were partly disassembled in Germany and reassembled stateside to manage import tariffs. That plant is why current U.S. Sprinters are, in a meaningful sense, American-built Mercedes vans.
Why some Sprinters say Dodge or Freightliner
During the DaimlerChrysler era the Sprinter was sold in the U.S. as the Dodge Sprinter from 2003 to 2009 and, in parallel, as the Freightliner Sprinter through commercial truck dealers. All three badges covered the same vehicle built on the same line with the same engines. After Chrysler separated from Daimler in 2009 the Dodge badge disappeared, and Mercedes-Benz became the primary retail brand while Freightliner continued serving fleet and commercial buyers. If you own a Dodge Sprinter, parts and service cross-reference to the Mercedes catalog.
