Cutaway box truck vs. cargo van
The cutaway is a Sprinter cab and chassis with no rear body — an upfitter bolts on a box, usually 12 to 17 feet long, with a flat floor at a fixed height, square walls, a roll-up or barn door and often a liftgate. The cargo van keeps the factory unibody: lower load floor, better weather sealing, better fuel economy, better security, and a shape that parks like a large van. The box truck wins on raw cubic feet and loading ergonomics; the van wins on driving, sealing and theft resistance.
Capacity and payload
A Sprinter box build commonly lands between roughly 400 and 700 cubic feet depending on box length and height, on chassis ratings from 3500 up to 4500 with payloads that can exceed 5,000 pounds. A high-roof 170 extended cargo van reaches about 533 cubic feet with roughly 3,000 to 5,000 pounds of payload depending on 2500 or 3500 rating. If your freight is bulky but light, the box wins. If it is dense, payload rating matters more than volume and both can work.
Licensing, height and access
At Sprinter weight ratings — up to about 11,030 pounds on the 3500 and higher on the 4500 — a standard driver's license is sufficient; CDL requirements begin at 26,001 pounds. Both body styles are tall: a box build often exceeds 10 feet, and a high-roof van runs roughly 9 to 10 feet. Neither fits most parking structures. The box truck's square rear opening plus liftgate is faster for palletized freight; the van's low floor is faster for hand-loaded goods.
