170 wheelbase vs. 170 extended
These are two different bodies and the distinction confuses buyers constantly. The standard 170-inch wheelbase van measures roughly 22.5 feet overall. The 170 extended keeps the same wheelbase but adds about 15 to 18 inches of rear overhang behind the back axle, pushing overall length toward 24 feet and adding meaningful cargo volume at the tail. Mechanically they are identical; the extended body simply has more van behind the rear wheels, which is where a luggage bay or a fourth row lives.
Interior dimensions and capacity
Behind the front seats, the 170 extended body offers roughly 15 to 17 feet of usable length, about 70 inches of width, roughly 53 inches between the wheel wells, and about 6 feet 4 inches of height in high-roof form. In passenger trim that supports four rows of seating for fifteen occupants, or three rows for twelve plus a luggage bay holding ten to twelve airline suitcases. In cargo trim it supports full 4x8 sheet goods flat on the floor and long-item hauling that shorter bodies cannot handle.
What the extra length costs you
Maneuverability. A 24-foot van has a wide turning circle, a long rear overhang that swings on tight corners, and real difficulty in urban parallel parking and older parking structures. Rear overhang also means the back of the van clears curbs and steep driveway aprons less gracefully — approach ramps at an angle. None of this is difficult once you expect it, but drivers coming from a 144-inch Sprinter notice the difference immediately on the first tight turn.
